The short version

  • EMT buses 24 and 25 run from the city to El Palmar and El Perelló. Route maps at emtvalencia.es.
  • Order paella valenciana as it was born: chicken, rabbit, garrofón beans — not a seafood mountain.
  • All i pebre, the eel and potato stew, is the starter locals order first.
  • Boats leave from the jetties by the El Palmar bridge for 30-to-45-minute lagoon rides; walking up without a booking is normal.
  • Time your boat for the last hour of light. The sunset over the water is the reason the place exists on postcards.
  • The Racó de l’Olla viewpoint and the El Saler dunes add an easy hour for birdwatchers and beach walkers.

Getting there

EMT city buses 24 and 25 run from central Valencia through the Albufera park to El Palmar and El Perelló in about 40 minutes for a standard city fare. A taxi does it in 25 minutes. Cyclists have it best of all: flat, dedicated paths run through the park, about an hour each way from the center, with El Saler beach on the way home.

The afternoon

Arrive by 13:00, walk the village, and sit down to the booked paella by 13:30 — the pans take 40 minutes and the kitchens will not start one at 16:30. After lunch, walk the rice-field edges toward the Racó de l’Olla viewpoint, then take the boat as the light goes gold. The ride back to the city after sunset closes the day at a city-bus price.

When to go

Albufera works year-round because the rice cycle keeps changing the picture: flooded mirror fields in winter, green walls of rice through summer, harvest machines in September and October. Winter brings the birds in numbers and the clearest sunsets. Summer adds beach time at El Saler to the same trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Albufera worth it if I can eat paella in the city?
The paella can be equally good in the city. The reason to come is eating it beside the rice that grew it, then watching the sun go down over the lagoon.

Do I need to book the boat?
No. Walk-up covers it outside summer weekends. Book the lunch table instead.

Can I bike there?
Yes, on flat dedicated paths through the park — about an hour each way from the city center.

What is real paella valenciana?
Chicken, rabbit, flat green beans, garrofón, rice, saffron, sometimes snails. Seafood versions exist and are fine; they are a different dish.

Is winter worth it?
Yes. Flooded fields turn to mirrors, wintering birds arrive in numbers, and the restaurants stay open. Bring a layer for the boat.
